Lyon County Court Records
Lyon County court records are records of documents, events, and processes filed in a court proceeding. They include any information, exhibits, motions, orders, transcripts, testimony, cross-examination, judgments, and dispositions the court prepares, collects, owns, and maintains during a legal proceeding.
A Lyon County court record search provides the researcher with information about the parties involved in the case, the type of case, trial dates, the case status, the arguments of the parties (plaintiff, defendant, prosecution), appeals, motions, and other court data maintained by the District Court Administrator. Lyon court records are essential to the Minnesota judicial system because they document the legal process and rights, grant public access to proceedings and decisions, and preserve records for appellate review, public scrutiny, and historical data.
Are Court Records Public in Lyon County?
Yes. Section 13.84 (7) of the Minnesota Data Practices Act provides that court records involving adult individuals are public records. By this provision, any person has the right to request or inspect copies of data collected, created, received, and maintained by the courts or other government entities in custody of court records. The responsible authorities are required by statute to provide copies of Lyon County public records upon request and at reasonable times and locations.
The Minnesota Rules of Public Access to Records of the Judicial Records also guide access to case records and identify and restrict disclosure of non-public court documents. Furthermore, under the Minnesota Data Practices Act, private or confidential court records cannot be disclosed except when the custodian is compelled by statute, with written permission from the source of the confidential record, to the court services department or any criminal justice agency.
